From our Conservation Committee: A common thing that keepers hear while they are working is, “Can I have one of those as a pet?”
Unfortunately, people routinely find a way to have exotic animals as pets, and the animals typically suffer as a result. Exotic pets, especially large ones like big cats or primates, require more than the average person can provide: special veterinary care, special diets, and designed spaces. The Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo once took in a female lion named Lady, who had been a pet. Lady was confiscated when she was found in a house in Mobile, AL, where, at 18 months, she was emaciated, weighing only 80 lbs. when she should have been closer to 200 lbs. AGCZ was fortunate enough at the time to be able to take her in and give her a long life. Lady was 19 when she passed away. However, due to the poor care she received when she was young, she remained too weak to ever live with another lion, which can be emotionally very difficult for the social carnivore. A fun challenge for a keeper of an ambassador animal is finding new ways to enrich them. Sometimes, enrichment is as simple as offering an everyday thing in a new way. This week, Waylon’s keepers made a puzzle feeder for him! It’s simple; just some holes poked in an upcycled container with his kibble. It took him a couple of minutes to understand the concept, but once he got it, he had a lot of fun running around with his toy and getting little snacks while he did it! #Wednesdayswithwaylon Waylon is proudly sponsored by Phillip and Dru Wheat.

Conservation Corner: When discussing how animals are doing in the wild, someone usually says, “This species is listed as vulnerable” or “This species is critically endangered.” But what list? Who decides the species’ status? When discussing how a plant or animal is listed, most are referring to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, or the IUCN, red list of threatened species. The point of the list is to measure the pressure acting on certain species and to guide and inform conservationists on how to best #ProtectWhatsLeft. The list currently includes seven rankings: Least Concern, Vulnerable, Endangered, Critically Endangered, Extinct in the Wild, and Extinct. iucnredlist.org

Check out Regina practicing her morning routine of ensuring everyone knows she lives here! Lions make a series of vocalizations, but one of the most popular is this territorial call. Keepers joke that Regina (and once upon a time Nandi, too) likes to “sing in the shower” by making these calls into her house, which echoes even more. Where do you do your best singing?

DYK? 🧐 - Keeper Ashlyn, using a decibel reader on her phone, registered Regina’s call at 90 decibels, which is a decibel level between a motorcycle and a police siren.

Creature Feature #3: Daniel, the Lion -
Lions are fascinating animals to work with; they are emotionally intelligent and are the only gregarious (or social) cats, which leads to them being highly reactive and unafraid of getting in your face if something upsets them. Daniel, however, is decidedly more relaxed, especially when compared to his siblings, Chadwick and Regina. Keepers usually describe Daniel as being “a sweet, simple boy,” not because he’s unintelligent, he’s actually very smart and likes to test his trainer frequently, but because he is easily entertained: his favorite toy is a large rock, and he loves to cuddle with his brother, no matter the temperature. At almost four years old, Daniel is nearly done growing. Lions typically mature at five years old, but let’s look at how much difference a year can make!
Lions are currently listed as “Vulnerable” by the IUCN, with the population decreasing, please help us here at the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo to #ProtectWhatsLeft.

Happy Earth Day!! We hope you have learned a lot about pollinators these last two weeks, both from around the world and locally, and we have a BIG Zoonouncement!

The AGCZ Sustainability Committee collaborated with Cooper Farm and added the newest addition to the Munsell Sustainable Garden - a pollinator garden!!! This garden features native plants for local and migrating butterflies and hummingbirds, and plants for our locally endangered Gopher Tortoise to dine on!

In celebration of Earth Day, we will be giving away pollinator, companion plant, cucumber, tomato, and luffa seeds in the gift shop throughout the day!

Thank you to the Munsells and Coopers for making this garden possible.

Ruffed lemurs (Varecia variegata and Varecia rubra) and ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) are known as one of the world’s largest pollinators. As frugivores, lemurs consume fruits and seeds that are later excreted in their forest habitats to be further dispersed for future growth. Lemurs use their elongated snouts and tongues to reach into flowering plants without harming the plant itself to ingest nectar. Pollen is then collected onto the lemurs’ fur and snout as it is transported from flower to flower. Lemurs can pollinate and act as seed dispersers to larger plant species that smaller animals such as bees and birds cannot. For example, ruffed lemurs are regarded as the primary pollinators of the traveler’s palm and have even influenced the trees’ evolution due to the palm being relatively challenging to pry open for smaller animals (Goodhue, 2016). Lemurs have an overall enormous impact on the biodiversity of their home in Madagascar. You can help Lemurs by checking for sustainable practices of products, such as Vanilla, that’s exported from Madagascar.

Conservation News:
As of mid-February of this year, the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) and the Convention on Migratory Species Secretariat signed an agreement to mobilize funds and action to conserve threatened African carnivores. This agreement will give much-needed protections to the carnivores whose territories may range through man-made borders, primarily focusing on lions, cheetahs, leopards, and African wild dogs. As Dr. Grethel Aguilar, IUCN Director General, said, “Nature does not recognize borders, and conservation needs to be coordinated internationally to be effective.” A decision like this one has been years in the making, sparking hope that lions, cheetahs, leopards, and African wild dogs may be around for generations. What a great zoo! We were very pleased with everything about it. It’s clean, there’s plenty of restrooms, they let you bring in your lunch or you can stop and pick up something from a pretty good variety of snacks and sandwiches from machines or go to a cafe. My daughter liked the carousel as well! Note that the carousel and the experiences are extra costs so read up on those before you visit. 👍

We enjoyed our visit to the Zoo. The wife and I visit Foley Alabama three times a year. This was our first time visiting the zoo there. There wasn’t a line to get inside, and had a great experience. Can’t wait to visit again.😊

We loved our visit! Such an affordable option for a zoo. Plenty of animals to see. Loved how close you get to all of them. Very clean and tidy. Disappointed the tigers weren’t out though. But overall a fantastic experience! Our kids loved it.

Such a beautiful zoo! Very clean with ample restrooms and benches. There were so many animals to see which was very unexpected. We saw tigers, lyons, monkeys, giraffes, lemurs, many types of local birds, etc. For an extra fee, you can feed the giraffes and have an opportunity to get up close and personal with several different zoo animals.

There is a great little enclosed bird area with turtles where you can sit and watch the birds. They also have a great gift shop with wonderful gift items.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience. We had a great time watching the animals and will definitely be back!

Very nice small zoo. They offered feeding a giraffe for $5 during a certain time window…very worth it! It is a beautiful zoo, a nice layout also with a petting zoo of farm animals for small kids. They have a merry-go-round. You can take a small motorized car ride to see a few animals. Enjoyed the day at the zoo. Employees work hard and are very knowledgeable.
